Metrology_Introduction

A Measurement System is a collection of operations, procedures, measurement instruments, fixtures and other equipment, software, personnel, environmental conditions and assumptions used to assign a number to the characteristic being measured. (MSA(2002). DaimlerChrysler, Ford, GM, A.I.A.G. Most of this material is taken from this source and from Escalante (2006)) The quality of the measurement system is important because measurements play a significant role in every human activity, especially in aerospace payload efforts. The quality of a measurement system is characterized by its statistical properties, which ideally speaking are:

  • zero bias
  • zero variability (Variability is the state or degree of being variable)
  • perfect classification

To evaluate a measurement system means to examine its variation as well as the factors affecting it.
